Before all the laser work started, there was a clay sculpture model to determine where the pattern should be, how much depth it should have, and where it should remain. Also, to check if the light reflection of the 3D pattern looks good enough. 

The clay sculpture was an ancient technique for creating 3D artwork before actually making it. This technique has also been used in car designs. 

After confirming the clay sculpture, the team scans it and builds a 3D model on the computer. 

The total laser engraving time was around 30 hours on this one, since titanium is harder to laser than brass or copper, and a lower-power laser is required for slower, more detailed engraving.
